Guru Amar Das Apahaj Ashram
Guru Amar Das Apahaj Ashram is non-profitable and non-political registered charity located near Saraba Village in Ludhiana. The founder of this charity is Dr.Naurang Singh Mangat who is a retired professor and Scientist. He settled as a Scientist in Canada but when he returned he felt sad to see the situation of homeless people in India, so for many years he pedaled his bicycle on the roads of slum and public areas to serve sick people who are left roadsides with nobody for their care. In his early days, he used to take the patients to the hospital for the treatment and pay their expenses and even look after them. The problem was that after the treatment where the homeless people should stays, as he had to leave them on the roadside again.
In 2009 he bought a property near Shaheed Kartar Singh, Saraba Village for the homeless people and started from a tent to a mud house then a building for the shelter. There are around 200 patients who reside there which include senior citizens, women, disabled and mentally retarded people. From 200 people, 150 people are dependent on medicines of which mostly are mentally retarded. These people are sending by Ludhiana Police, Railway Police and Civil Hospital. There are 35 staff members who are working for the patient includes doctor, physicist, nurses, cooks, attendant, caretaker etc. There is one building which is for ladies and the numbers of ladies are around 55.The main objective is to provide shelter and healthcare to look after the homeless, destitute, disabled, mentally sick, handicapped, blind, senior citizens irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
