Proposal for Sponsorship of DigitalAccessible Books for Persons with Print Disability
Introduction
Education has the power to transform lives—but only when it’struly accessible. At Saksham Punjab, we’re working to break down the invisible barriersfaced by students with visual impairments and print disabilities. Whiletechnology has opened many doors, the reality remains that most textbooks arestill only available in print, shutting out thousands of eager learners. It’stime to reimagine inclusive education—not as a special provision, but as astandard for all.
About Saksham Punjab
Saksham Punjab is a non-governmental organization dedicatedto empowering persons with visual and print disabilities. Since our inception,we have provided hundreds of students with tools for accessibleeducation—including talking books, screen reader training, and assistivetechnology. We work collaboratively with educational institutions, governmentbodies, and other NGOs to advocate for inclusion, accessibility, and equalopportunities.
Challenges Faced by the Visually Impaired
Students with visual impairments often rely on alternativeformats such as braille, audio, or screen-reading technology to access content. However, these resources are scarce and not widely available across diversecurriculums. This gap severely limits students’ academic performance, independence, and future career opportunities.
Our Initiative – Digital Accessible Books
To bridge this accessibility gap, Saksham Punjab producesDigital Accessible Books tailored to the syllabi of major educational boardsincluding CBSE, ICSE, and PSEB. These books are screen-reader compatible andaccessible via smartphones, tablets, and computers. They allow students tonavigate, read, and engage with the content independently and with confidence.
Plan for the Year 2025–2026
In the upcoming academic year, we aim to produce 150 DigitalAccessible Books, each averaging 200 pages. At an estimated ?50 per page, theproduction cost per book is approximately ?10,000. These books will bedistributed at no cost to visually impaired students across Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi.
